What we may know better than they (but not for long) is that these ages of exploration are endless. Once they have crossed that ocean, and circumnavigated those continents and summited their Everests, there are still new worlds to encounter and engage. Just as the Earth spins on its axis, the historical narrative is re-spun with every reading and every telling. Eventually, our ambitious students will shake off gravity, but even then, when they look down at the spinning tale that is the Earth and its inhabitants, they will not have escaped the never-ending cycle. They will revolve around the Earth and the Sun, which in turn revolve around other heavenly bodies, and each other. They will also perceive their universe in a way Ptolemy could not have. There is nowhere where time and space stop providing shifting, spinning ground for new perspectives and new tellings. This wiki--Ecumene--is a place for students and teachers to tell their tales and share their perspectives; to constantly rewrite History. I hope it proves fertile ground both for practical exercises (such as our growing database of AP World History multiple choice questions and essays) and more daring explorations of human history, cosmopolitanism, human universals, humanism, interfaith diversity and dialogue, global studies and issues, and our implication in the success of our shared planet--our Ecumene. It is also a place for social interaction and fun, and contributors and guests should feel free to share anything of interest or excitement with the Ecumene community. To navigate the site, use the drop-down menu in the left hand sidebar. Click on the arrows to find sub-sections and specific wiki pages created by teachers and students involved in the many global and cosmopolitan projects based from our wiki. For your convenience, here are some direct links to some of our more popular sections:
Now that you have been introduced to our site, please visit often. When every day is 1492, there is no telling what tomorrow's Ecumene will be. --WJT. This site is the companion to my teacher's blog: The World Global weblog. _______________________

I am setting an EC challenge: Come up with the best, most creative name for the new wiki. I have suggested "The World Global" and "Ecumene" but they might not sing to all of you, so make some suggestions!
Keep in mind, I will not be going for Myspace-esque silliness like "Desi-Emo Wonderland"; "King Artorius's Nerd-o-Rama"; or "Hazera's Homework Hotzone". But if you can come up with a cool, international, intellectual, global, etc. name--there are some points in it for you. Post your suggestions in this thread. --WJT. |

I changed the name of the site tonight from "The World Global" which was just something I toyed with when I started this site to "Ecumene" as it says in the home page. Unfortunately, by doing so I re-activated the ads that Wetpaint posts on non-education sites. They should be gone in about 48 hours.
